Split

Split is Croatia’s second largest city and the largest one in Dalmatia region. The city is known for its ancient sights, sandy beaches, and rich nightlife. It was founded as a Greek colony in 3rd century BC, and one of its most important and recognizable monuments to this day is the Diocletian’s Palace built for the Roman emperor in AD 305.

Split is located on a peninsula between the Gulf of Kaštela and the Split Channel. The historic center of Split was included into the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list. The city is considered one of Croatia’s culture centers. Sights you should visit if in Split are the Diocletian’s Palace that still contains originally preserved ancient sites, The Split Peristyle, a square located in the eastern part of the palace that is considered the most beautiful in the city, Cathedral of St. Dominus that is an architectural masterpiece dating all the way back to Diocletian’s rule, and many more. Split is home to many interesting museums such as The Archeological Museum, The Ethnographical Museum, The Croatian Maritime Museum etc.

You should also visit the Split Riva, a promenade along the sea located near the Diocletian’s palace. A wonderful place to visit is Marjan forest park, a picturesque park in Split, wonderful for relaxing. Beach Bačvice is Split’s most famous beach and is less than half an hour away from the city center.

It is amazingly connected to the rest of Croatia through highways, the Split Airport located in Kaštela, around 20km outside of Split is the second largest airport in Croatia. The Port of Split is the third busiest port in the Mediterranean and serves 4 million passengers every year. It connects Split to the nearby Dalmatian islands such as Brač, Hvar, Šolta, as well as some more distant ones like Vis, Korčula, Mljet, and Lastovo.
